Blog Action Day – It’s like every day, just more organised

It’s Blog Action Day.

A groovy social media online post-gasm where thousands of bloggers sound off on a collective subject, which this year is poverty. A fitting topic for downturns and stuff, even though many of us aren’t feeling the pinch yet.

Ironically it’s also the day that most of us Mac fans are eyeing up the new laptop releases, checking our credit card balances and trying to figure out whether we can justify spuffing four figures-worth of coin on a shiny new toy. But I digress…

I don’t have a huge point to make really. In my line of work, we see the narrative power of blogging, and other more pedestrian forms of social media, every single day.

It’s inspiring. It makes us privileged. It’s a joy to be tasked with tracking the amazing things that people do for the causes that matter to them. It’s lovely to see a community gathering around the narratives both citizen and professional bloggers alike are spreading.

I hope Kiva have processed some cash today. I hope it inspires just a small percentage of those touched by today’s content to do something a little bit extra. I hope it helps us all put our personal situations into perspective. I hope more people will tell more stories which help raise money for those who need it most.

That’s the whole point, isn’t it?
